Our Store
The Urban Settler is a Lifestyle, Furniture, Interior Design & Decor Company. We are a family business, founded in 1998.
Our home is the historic Livery Building in Fernie British Columbia, constructed in 1908 using stones harvested from the mighty Elk River.
From this location, the Fernie Livery, Dray, and Transfer Co. once served the Elk Valley, delivering dry goods and coal to homes and businesses. More than 100 years later, from this same location, we are proud to serve Fernie, The Elk Valley, Kootenays, and beyond.
Inside the thick stone walls is a light filled showroom, with a curated collection of wares and a story to tell - Modern sofas, unique decor, sturdy reclaimed wood furniture, vintage finds, sumptuous bedding, beautiful window coverings, & lighting providing interior design services, blinds, quality sofas, wood furniture, bedding, lighting, art, & decor.
Our Website

Like our store, our website is a carefully curated selection of product: Sofas, couches, & sectionals that we have actually seen, touched, and sat in at the manufacturers showrooms and have a proven track record with our clients.
Reclaimed, recycled, & solid wood Dining tables, coffee tables, end tables, beds, dressers, and chests we have discovered through our travels to furniture and design shows. Owner Paul Arcoite is known to vigorously inspect each piece before adding it our approved list.
Our Interior Designer, Anna Lowther, personally approves each lighting fixture, rug, and decor accessory that you'll find on these pages.
Almost all lifestyle photos, room photos, project photos, store photos, and many product photos were taken by our own photographer Kristine Wiess.
All members of The Urban Settler team have contributed to site, right down to the descriptions of the individual products that we know so well.
We encourage you to
contact us if you have any questions or want more detail regarding any of the product on this website. It's this personal touch that sets us apart from the ecommerce sites of the mega corporations and off-shore companies.
Our History
The Urban Settler was founded in North Vancouver British Columbia in 1998 by owner Paul Arcoite. The company specialized in sourcing reclaimed wood, & designing and manufacturing furniture, feature walls, and flooring, as well as sourcing and restoring antiques and vintage décor.
The company worked with interior designers, architects, and home owners and was a supplier to the commercial interiors trade. The raw materials that sourced far-a-field found their way into the interiors of some prominent interiors, including
the HSBC head offices on Virtual Way in Vancouver British Columbia.
In 2008 Paul and his family relocated to Fernie BC, in the beautiful Elk Valley. In 2012 The Urban Settler and opened a furniture and interior design store, and the company was transformed into a Lifestyle Home Furnishings, Décor, and Interior Design Company.
Our Mission
To go above and beyond, helping our clients create home interiors that are well adapted to the values of modern mountain living: "In the mountains, we embrace hard work, balanced with outdoor recreation, casual living, and leisure time spent at home with family and friends."
